Jane Carter is a visionary leader, making history as the first woman to head a global production music company. As the President of Universal Production Music, she oversees the company and its worldwide entities, whilst pioneering new growth in streaming technology, gaming, health and wellness, and traditional forms of media.
Jane’s drive and vision have seen the launch of multiple ground-breaking initiatives and commercially successful deals. As a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in the music industry, Carter is the driving force behind the global mentorship program 100% HER.
Created to empower women with long-term career opportunities, 100% HER has played a crucial role in developing female talent in the music industry. Under her leadership, Universal Production Music’s female composers have increased by 400% globally since launch. This year, 20% of works within the companies’ owned labels feature a female composer, up from 7% in 2020. The project’s impact is global, with female mentorship, events, panels, and albums in the UK, South Africa, Germany, France, the Nordics, APAC, and the US.
100% HER has been recognised by The Ivors Academy, WACL, and She Said So, and received multiple nominations for Music Week’s Women in Music DE&I Initiative of the Year award.
Jane’s foresight extends to championing Black artists, songwriters, and producers through the Power to the People initiative, which was created to increase the number of tracks by Black artists in Universal Production Music’s catalogue.
Carter led Universal Production Music to become the first major publisher with a Green Production Music catalogue, featuring 66 composers like Jesse Quin of Keane, who produced over 600 sustainable tracks. GPM’s collaborations include unique partnerships with BAFTA albert, Green Producers Club, Pilio, and Virtual Sound.
Carter has over 25 years of senior experience in the Publishing, Recording, and Broadcast industries. Her previous roles include Managing Director of Universal Production Music UK, General Manager at BBC Worldwide Music Publishing, Creative Director for BBC Music, and Head of Marketing at Warner Classics UK. She launched a BBC Talent Initiative, managed George Fenton’s BBC partnership, created ‘BBC’s Earth in Concert,’ and started her own live events company.
